Canberra’s purpose built conference building is the National Convention Centre, and its Royal Theatre is the largest tiered auditorium in the territory at 1,710 raked seats, 2,460 theatre in total. The constraint there is not the plenary, it is the exhibition floor: the Exhibition Hall is 2,000 square metres with a nine metre ceiling and 120 booths, which is small by capital city standards. Anything larger goes to Exhibition Park in Mitchell, a separate site with no adjacent hotels.
Only one Canberra hotel seats a thousand in a single room. QT Canberra’s pillarless Grand Ballroom takes 1,000 theatre across 830 square metres with 205 rooms above it. The next tier is Hotel Realm in Barton at 800 theatre and the Hyatt at 500, so a residential conference much above a thousand delegates is split across four or more properties out of a citywide pool of roughly 7,500 rooms.
What Canberra does that nowhere else in Australia can is the national institutions. The National Museum’s Gandel Atrium takes a thousand for a reception or 500 seated, the National Gallery’s Gandel Hall is the gala dinner room of the Parliamentary Triangle, and Australian Parliament House hires event space of its own. Combine that with departmental proximity and a convention centre in a walkable city centre and you have the reason association boards keep choosing Canberra. See the venues we would start with.
Canberra is built for business events. The National Convention Centre, a cluster of capital-city hotels and the parliamentary and gallery precincts all sit minutes from one another, so delegates spend very little of the day getting between them. It suits government, association and corporate conferences that want both easy access and a sense of occasion. We source across the city and negotiate rates for single events or recurring programs.
What each one is really good for, with the figures the venue publishes for itself. Figures checked 1 October 2026. We source right across Canberra, so treat this as a starting point rather than a list.

Based on venue suitability alone.
The area you choose shapes everything from how easily delegates arrive to what you will pay for dinner. These are the ones we source across most, and what each is good for.
Where the convention centre is the plenary and delegates walk between venue, hotel and dinner. Crowne Plaza sits beside the centre and Novotel is a few blocks up Northbourne, which is the deepest walkable room block in the city.
The venues you cannot get anywhere else: the National Gallery, the National Museum, Old Parliament House, the Portrait Gallery, Questacon. Essentially no hotel accommodation of its own, so delegates sleep in Barton or Civic and coach in.
When the agenda is government, defence or peak body and proximity to Parliament House matters more than proximity to the convention centre. Hotel Realm plus the hotels around it give you a conference and its room block in one small pocket.
Dining, drinks and the social program rather than plenary space. Accommodation is apartment led rather than large blocks, and it is a short drive from both Barton and the Triangle.
Informal dine arounds, breakout dinners and brand events with a younger audience, five to ten minutes on foot from the city hotels and the convention centre.
Only when the room size forces you out of the city. Exhibition Park for floor beyond 2,000 square metres, AIS Arena for a seated audience above 3,000. Neither has hotels alongside it.
No destination is right for every brief, and the useful conversation is about where the limits are. These are the ones that change a Canberra program most often.
The Canberra Convention Bureau tells planners plainly to work around the Federal Parliament sitting calendar, which is released each November. Accommodation and rates move sharply in a sitting week and a lot of the audience you want in the room is unavailable.
Floriade runs from mid September to mid October in Commonwealth Park and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. It is a wonderful thing to have on a delegate program and a difficult thing to book a room block against.
The Royal Theatre will hold 2,460, but the Exhibition Hall is 2,000 square metres. If your trade floor needs more than that, the exhibition and the accommodation cannot sit in the same precinct, because Exhibition Park has no hotels beside it. A larger convention centre is planned, but its business case is not expected before mid 2028.
Everything above this point is information. It is genuinely useful, and no other venue finder in Australia publishes it. But it is not the thing you are actually buying.
What you are buying is someone who has already had the conversation with the person who holds that room, knows what they will move on and when, and will pick up the phone rather than send you a portal login. Whoever takes your Canberra brief stays your point of contact from the first call through to the day of your event.

Departmental proximity, the national institutions and a convention centre in a walkable city centre are why association and government boards choose Canberra. Sitting weeks, Floriade and the exhibition floor limit are the three things that decide whether your dates will work, and we check all three before we shortlist.
Every venue has something worth knowing before you sign. A difficult load in, a low ceiling, a pre function space that struggles once the room is full. You will hear that from us at shortlist, not on the day.
There is no fee for our service. The sourcing, the local knowledge and the negotiating are all included, and the rate you end up with is usually better than booking direct.
You will have Canberra options to consider within 48 hours.
